The competition aims to analyze the lakeside area of the Municipality of Lonato del Garda (BS), located between the architectural and monumental site of Maguzzano Abbey and the shores of Lake Garda, from which it is approximately 2 km away as the crow flies.
This is a large area with a predominantly agricultural purpose, though it is now in a state of partial disuse. Within this general area, it is possible to identify sub-zones, each with its own characteristics. For this reason, the zone has been divided into four work areas that can be addressed individually or all together. The project must be carried out by selecting one of the areas identified in the following points. All these areas are located between the shores of Lake Garda to the east and via Maguzzano to the west, and from via Santa Giulia to the north to via Reciago to the south.
The area has valuable environmental features, particularly in the central and western parts, where the monumental complex of Maguzzano Abbey is located, with an annexed enclosed orchard garden and cemetery. The zone also contains scattered recently built homes and historic farmhouses, as well as a hydrographic network of historic hydraulic systems, which includes the remains of a mill on via Maccarona, now converted into a contemporary building. This area is predominantly agricultural, with low-quality farming that is partially abandoned.
The lakeside area has been more heavily modified in two main ways: the part near the shore has been used for tourist and recreational purposes with the construction of two establishments and a large hotel. The modified area also includes a subdivision to the southeast, on the border with Desenzano, which features contemporary construction with no particular compositional merit.
